a majority of people preferred the night to the day, and tory carlise was no exception. the night was much livelier, while the day was filled with schools and studying, at least for those who chose to attend. it was no secret to anyone that at least half of the students at new york's academy of the arts, the school in which the nineteen year old model was a student, did not attend class on a regular basis. naturally, they had better things to do.
the night was a much better time for a majority of the students. night time meant parties; parties with endless amounts of alcohol for the underage students to drink. having a law against such activities really was pointless, at least for this particular school. almost all of the students broke that law almost every night, drinking to excess at the party of someone they barely knew. they weren't even supposed to be in possession of the alcohol, but it wasn't hard to get a hold of at least a bottle of vodka.
but this night was different. tonight, there were no parties that she was aware of, or at least none that she considered good enough to attend. nights like these were rare, especially since it was a saturday. saturday nights usually had more parties than one could keep track of, and tonight there was none. she couldn't quite figure out how in the world that was possible.
that was how tory found herself sitting in a booth at the olive garden. this italian restaurant had been the first restaurant that she visited when she came to new york for the first time. back in austrailia, she'd never seen one of them. whenever she went home for summer vacations, her occasional visits to this restaurant where one of the things that she missed the most.
she was considered a regular at this favorite restaurant of hers. she usually came in on sundays for lunch, as sunday was, obviously, the most boring day of the week. it was the day of rest for most, and the day of football for boys. not many came out and about on sundays, and the restaurant wasn't usually filled to the brim like it would be on week nights.
surprisingly, the restaurant was near empty when she walked in. saturday nights were usually the busiest of all week days; she was even preparing for a forty-five minute wait before she could even get in. it was quite disappointing to her. you never knew who'd be out and about, and you never knew who you'd need to impress.
the hostess sat her down in a small booth around the corner, away from a group of giggling girls at the bar. usually, she would be one of them, but tonight, she just found them annoying. she made herself possible in the booth away from the annoying group, and glanced at the menu before having a look around the actual restaurant. there were a few people scattered here and there, but no one in particular caught her eye.

jackson couldn't believe he was working saturday nights. he honestly didn't even feel like leaving his dorm that day. he'd taken a ton of good shots that day; his model for the day, audrina something or other and this other girl had been his models, and they'd actually worked and given him a ton of great shots. he was pretty happy; he wouldn't have failed out of his photography course with good models. but no, he had to come to work from five to ten, which were, usually, the busiest times of the day.
in his dorm he got dressed in the normal uniform before he fixed his hair. he was pretty relaxed that day; he honestly couldn't care that day. his mind was set on photography; he couldn't care about work at the moment. but he had to; he needed the goddamn money. or else he could kiss college goodbye, and he didn't want that at all. so, he forced his butt out the door, but not before he grabbed his jacket and keys and phone. he had to walk all the way down to olive garden; his stupid car was in the shop and he wouldn't get it back for another three days.
he had to suffer twenty minutes in the cold; pretty soon he was outside olive garden. pushing past the people waiting outside, he clocked in before going into the staff lounge. chucking his jacket down on the coat rack in the corner, he put his name tag on before shoving almost everything he bought in hsi pocket. sighing, he walked back out to the main area. he went over to lorelei, his boss, who was standing there looking intimidating like always. after getting orders barked at him like usual, he went off to wait on tables.
not that many people were there, which surprised him. usually this was their busiest night, but it was almost empty today, save for a few people here and there. soon, he was told by the other waitress if he could grab booth seven ( she was going off shift ), he nodded at her before going over. he looked down at the girl that sat at the booth; he knew her...sort of. she was one of those models at the school. a few years younger than him, he knew. he was pretty sure he'd seen her that day during the shoot. hell, she might have been the other girl he worked with, he couldn't remember. clearing his throat, he talked, repeating the same stupid line they were forced to say. "evening, madam. i'm jackson, your waiter for the evening. is there anything i could get you?" the girl could probably tell how much he didn't really like saying that. when lorelei walked back to her office, he decided small talk would also work. "you go to new york academy right? the one like, ten minutes awya from here?" nice going, smart one. there was only one academy around here. he was an idiot at times...

saturday night was the one night that tory always made sure that she had off. her parents had forced her to get a job to occupy her time, even if she really didn't need the money. her father sent her money in large intervals whenever she asked for it; that had never been a problem. still, they were convinced that she needed to learn to "fend for herself", at least to some degree, and so she was forced to get a job. still, she only worked a day or two a week, hostessing at the other restaurant in town, 'la bella vista'. but she definitely wasn't going to waste her weekends walking people to seats.
she sat patiently, waiting for whoever was assigned to take her order to come and do so. she wasn't in any hurry(it wasn't like she had anything else more important to do, anyway), so it didn't bother her that her waiter or waitress didn't come over right away. usually, though, whenever someone took more than two minutes to get to her booth after she sat down, their tip was docked down to fifteen percent, even if they were the best waiter she'd ever had. maybe that would teach them to get over faster.
the restaurant was quiet, probably due to the fact that there were close to no people around. it was almost shocking; the other times she'd decided to come here on a saturday night, it was bursting with life. hell, the other times she'd come here on a week night, it was, more often than not, full to the brim. perhaps tonight was just a slow night? she'd hear something about snow in the forcast; maybe people didn't want to risk going out somewhere and not being able to get home? or maybe there was a party that, somehow, she hadn't heard about? but she shook her head quickly, dismissing the thought. that was impossible.
she heard someone clear his or her throat, and she turned her head to see her waiter, a boy who introduced himself as jackson. he looked familiar; she'd definitely seen him somewhere, and probably more than once. school, maybe? he looked pretty young, so it was more than possible that he went to school with her. she was about to ask him to get her a diet coke when he asked her if she went to the academy. she nodded; she knew she'd seen him before. "yeah." she said. "i'm tory, modeling major." she nodded. "i'm assuming you go there, too? considering you just asked me if i went there, and you look totally familiar."

so she did go to the academy. he should've known. he just wasn't thinking. she might have even been one of the girls he'd worked with before. he couldn't remember. hearing her question, he nodded. "yeah, photography major. i'm jackson." he gave her a friendly smile with the shrug of his shoulders. he looked behind him; no one really seemed to need him. hello, there wasn't anybody there. turning back to her, he spoke. "what's your order? it won't take too long since no body's here." he shrugged at her.
after he'd written it down, he handed it off to one of the other employees there before he made himself comfortable across from her. eh. they didn't need him. he sat forward, his elbows resting on the table. "so, tory. why'd you come here tonight? alone?" that was the weird thing. people, especially teenagers, didn't really come to the restaurant alone. usually it was either with a group of people or a date. at least, that was what he usually saw. he hadn't really ever seen someone enter olive garden alone. it was quite rare.
he glanced around; in the time that he'd sat down, about two people had come in, and three had left. it was even more emptier than before. this was one of the slowest nights he'd had to endure yet. now he really was getting sick of working tonight. he looked at tory that sat across from him. he wondered if she was willing to help him. "how good are you at faking sick?" sure, usually that worked for classes, but it's been known to work here. he once remembered he and ariella had done the same thing to get Jackson out of working; she'd faked that she was going to throw up, and he offered to take her home, and they'd just let him off for the night.
"if you fake it good enough, i think i can get out of here for the night. and maybe find a better place to go, better thing to do, better places to see." in his simpler words, he was sick of olive garden for the night. or for his lifetime. he'd probably get a new job, if that was possible. probably not; people around here were sweet to him. and he'd applied to ever other normal place there was, and olive garden was the first one that was in desperate need. apparently other people had quit too; probably for various reasons. he looked at the girl, and to help her make up her mind about helping a nearly complete stranger, attempted the fake pout that he used to be a master of when he was little; it still worked to an extent sometimes.

she nodded when he introduced himself. "i gathered that before." she said, smirking. he was a photography major; it made sense as to why he seemed so familiar now. she'd probably worked with him at some point before. the modeling majors and photography majors worked together most of the time. a photographer needed a model and a model needed a photographer, so why not mix the two? he asked her what she wanted, and she glanced quickly at the menu. she didn't know why, considering she got the same thing every time she came to this particular restaurant. "um... the chicken alfredo sounds good." she said.
she almost laughed when he sat down across from her. even if it was a little odd, she didn't mind. the boy was probably bored out of his mind with the emptiness here. still, she found it kind of funny that he just handed off his duties to someone else so they could strike up a conversation. the person he'd handed the paper to was probably grateful, though; it gave them something to do, if only for a second. she put one elbow on the table and rested her head in her hand. "well" she said. "first off, there are no good parties tonight. secondly, everyone i called either didn't pick up their phone or still sounded hung over from a party last night. and thirdly, i kind of like to be alone sometimes. even if it's kind of boring." she shrugged simply.
his next question caught her off guard, and she gave him a look of curiosity. what did that have to do with anything, and why would she ever have to fake sick? it wasn't like this was a class or whatever, and how could her faking sick get him out of there? it wasn't like he had to help her down to the nurse's office or anything, like one would have to at school. "i'm... decent at it." she said, shrugging her shoulders. "i'm no actress, but i've been known to get out of a class whenever i feel the need."
he explained a bit, and she gave a slight nod of the head. she was starting to figure out why having her "sick" might get him out of work; he'd have to help her, of course. make sure she got home safely. she had to let out a laugh at the pout he gave her. "now, how could i say no to that?" she asked sarcastically, rolling her eyes for extra affect. "so, do you want me to just sit here and look pale? or would it be better if i asked your boss yourself?" she had to admit, her formerly boring night had the option of getting interesting. she wasn't going to pass up an opportunity like that.

he honestly could swear he worked with this girl before. he didn't know why he was still thinking back to it, but it was bugging him. and when something bugged him he had to figure out why. she was probably the one he worked with today, or in the past. and thinking back to the day made him really wish he was back at home developing those stupid pictures. but hello, he had a potentially better evening waiting for him. so he shook the thoughts out of his head and turned back to tory.
hearing her reasons, he nodded; he understood where she was coming from perfectly. he seemed to be able to understand these kinds of things. but he didn't say anything; instead, he chose to wait out until she answered the other question. the other random question he just threw out there. he listened to her, and he knew that she was momentarily confused. but he saw recognition arrive on her face once he spoke. grinning as she gave in, he shrugged. "hmm..maybe you talking to her will work better. don't think boss lady's my biggest fan." she probably wasn't; when ariella had always come by during his shifts, he'd always just kind of got out of working, so the lady wasn't his favorite admirer at the moment.
"if you do, hmm..." he tried to think. "well, the rink's probably still open." he hadn't been there a while, mostly because he tended to avoid the place. his butt didn't need anymore contact with the ice. "or...the club, really." he wasn't one to really go to the club either. he actually didn't think he'd ever set foot in there. well, that was probably not true. he probably had; in his freshman year, maybe. he honestly couldn't remember. but other than those two places, he couldn't think of any place else to go. "unless you got other ideas?" he was pretty lame at picking places to go; he usually left that decision to other people.

the more that tory looked at jackson, the more she was convinced that she knew him more than she thought. she worked with photography students on a regular basis, just because the modeling major and the photography major was so closely connected; a model need a photographer, and a photographer needs a model. still, though, she never really recognized the photography students outside of school. she knew some of them by face, but that was only just after she worked with them. say, if she worked with a photographer that day, she'd remember him or her the next. but the week after? forget about it.
that was why it was almost irritating to her that she'd recognized jackson just after he'd approached her to take her order. she thought back to earlier that day, racking her brain for some way she may have bumped into him in a hall or passed him on the street. she and audrina had done some saturday work, something none of the models usually did. it was extra practice, and there was nothing better than posing with your best friend. they'd laughed the whole time; she was surprised their photographer hadn't shaken his head, packed his stuff and left after the first five minutes. she thought back to that photographer's face, and realized that she had seen jackson earlier that day. "hey, did you happen to take some pictures earlier today? like, as extra stuff?" she asked him, even though she already knew the answer.
she heard him say that it might be better if she were the one to get him off the hook, and she nodded. she had a feeling it would end up that way; considering he'd come up with the idea, she assumed he'd done this before. without a word, she stood up from her seat and walked to the front of the restaurant. she was a regular here on the weekends when there were no suitable parties, so she knew her fair share about the restaurant. she knew that there was a woman always standing at the front of the restaurant, observing, wearing ugly pantsuits and glaring scrutinizingly at all the employees. she could only assume that the woman was jackson's boss.
"excuse me?" she said as she approached the woman, putting on her polite voice. she waited for the woman to acknowledge her, but she spoke again before the older of the two could get one word out of her mouth. "i'm sorry to bother you, miss, but i just got so dizzy all of the sudden! it must have been something i ate earlier. i can hardly drive home in my condition, of course; my head is spinning so fast i'd probably drive my car straight into a ditch. so i was wondering, might i borrow one of your employees to drive me home? it doesn't seem as if you need your entire wait staff tonight." just as the woman opened her mouth to say something, she took two twenty dollar bills out of her pocket and handed it to the woman. "it's for my meal, and for your kindness. thank you, miss!" she said, and turned to collect her things at the table.
"mission accomplished." she said as she got back to her table, reaching over to grab her jacket and purse. "i didn't let her get a word in edgewise; she literally couldn't say no." she smirked. "the skating rink, i don't think so. i really don't feel like falling on my ass today. and i've never seen you at the club once, so i'm assuming that's not really a place you'd like to go." she said. "we could always just drive around until we found something interesting?" she turned around and saw the boss woman still standing over in the front of the restaurant, looking over at them. "help me walk." she whispered to jackson. "we've got to make this convincing to ms. boss lady."

he looked up at her as she asked him that question, and he thought back to today. "uhm...yeah, i had." he looked confused for a minute, but then he realized that it was one of the girls that had been laughing their heads off during the extra practice. he hadn't left like he knew some of his photography friends would; he stuck it out. besides, some of the pics of them laughing were pretty good. "you were one of the models, weren't you?" he grinned at her; at least it wasn't a complete stranger he was now sitting with. \
he actually thought back to the day, and he knew that he really did know her. he remembered practically begging them to please stop laughing just so they could get some good shots in, but something always set the two girls off and they'd be laughing their heads off. eventually, he saw that this could actually be very good for his photo shoot. so he'd taken a ton of shots of them, most of them laughing. but they'd turned out great; he'd developed them and they'd turned out better than great, actually.
she didn't say a word, but he watched her as she stood up. he quickly arranged his face to a look of concern, making sure that he wouldn't laugh. he watched her as he walked right up to his boss; damn, that woman was intimidating. if jackson had been in her position, he wouldn't bolted for it by now. he could dimly hear tory's voice as she talked to her boss. he covered his mouth with his hand to keep the smile from showing, but managed to make it seem thoughtful as she handed a twenty over before returning to the table.
he watched her as she gathered her stuff. listening, he thought abou tit. "yeah, no club. awh, but skating's fun. but if you don't want to." he tried to think about it. but hearing her suggestion, he nodded before grinning. "driving sounds good." he looked at her as she whispered. glancing at boss lady through his hair, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder, almost protectively. "did you drive here?" he asked in a voice of concern. he could feel boss lady's eyes on him, and the quicker they got out of there, the better. taking slow, exaggerated steps until they reached the outside, he undraped his arm once he was certain boss lady couldn't see them from where she was still standing.
"so who drives?" now he was pretty happy. not only did he not have to go through two or three more hours of his shift, but he had a new friend ( hopefully ) and he was ( hopefully ) having something else to do. he looked at her. "what about.... hmm....we could go somewhere random, like the beach!" he didn't know why the beach, but he hadn't been there in a while. sure, it was winter, so it wasn't the best...but it was still sort of fun. "or the mall.....i don't know. i can't think. boss lady's glare is still kind of on us." that woman wasn't exactly the most trusting woman in the world. she was paranoid.

the boy looked confused for a moment, and she watched as realization crossed his face. she smiled and shrugged quickly. "yeah, that was me." she said proudly, smiling at him. she thought back to the day, and looked at his to see if he'd say anything else. she and audrina had laughed almost the whole time; he'd definitely say something if he'd been annoyed by it, right? not that she really cared; if he had a problem with it, he didn't have to hang out with her now. still, he didn't look like he was going to comment any further on it.
she wondered if he'd actually gotten any shots from the shoot. he'd tell her if he didn't, right? it was only weekend work, after all; it didn't really matter if they got more for their portfolio out of it or not. still, it would have been a complete waste of time, and she completely hated wasting time. considering that she wasn't even doing that much now, though, it was okay. she probably would have just spent the day laying down in her room watching soap operas. that wasn't exactly oodles of fun.
when she turned to walk back to jackson after talking to his boss, she couldn't help but notice the look of concern that he'd thrown on his face. the kid was definitely a much better actor than he was; he really did look concerned. he probably had a lot of practice with this, or so she assumed, considering it was his idea and everything. still, she knew people who'd had more experience with something like this and couldn't make it believable for shit.
she heard his child-like whine thing when she rejected the idea of skating, and she cracked a smile. "it's kind of juvenile, don't you think?" she asked, allowing herself a minute to turn and look at him. "i mean, isn't it filled with, like, fourteen year olds? and im kind of a fan of keeping my pants without holes. the last time i went skating, i fell down so much that i made holes in the knees of my jeans." she was a bit surprised when he wrapped his arm around her in a protective manner, but she saw his boss staring at the two of them out of the corner of her eye. instead of talking, she simply nodded, afraid her definitely-not-sick voice would give them away.
once they were outside, she turned to look at him without worrying that the stupid boss woman was glaring at them. "i think it'll probably be more convincing it you drive." she said. "considering i'm much to sick to drive"-she rolled her eyes with the sarcasm of that statement-"and you wouldn't have any other way to get home if you didn't take your own car. i'll just have someone take me here so i can pick up my car tomorrow." she raised an eyebrow at him when he suggested the beach. "incase you didn't notice, it's kind of winter?" she said, and let out a laugh. "honestly, i don't care where we go. surprise me." she said.
