"I'll call you again, Viv, but its getting late," her lips moved against the air, creating sound. The cellphone against her ear was silent for a moment before a dead buzzing came to her ear, a sign that the girl on the other end (her sister) had shut off her phone before saying goodnight--again. A tired frown touched the corner of Jessica's lips. Her and her sister, Vivica, hadn't been on good terms since she had decided to go to another state for college, though her parents had obviously been happy with her departure from their quiet life. She and Vivica had been close, but now with the distance seperating them physically, she felt that their emotional bond was failing as well. They were not as tight as they had been before, not close enough to be able to see each other regularly. She knew that this was only going to get worse if she didn't come to another Christmas, so she knew that she either had to get a good job or get payed for playing her violin somewhere. She would greatly prefer the latter, but she knew that her skills needed touching up and finding jobs for that would be even more difficult. It would be better for her if she simply got a part-time somewhere, which would help her provide for herself rather then being completely reliant on her parents money. But that was another conversations, another problem for another day.
Jessica pushed her free arm against the glass and metal doors that lead out into the area which all students wandered through everyday. The cold air slapped her in the face as she departed from the warmer building into the outside. Clementine Gardens was where she was walking into now, the snow had been cleared off of the student pathways while the grass was hidden beneath great white piles of slush and snow. The night was quite a bit higher in temperature then the nights before, though still far from the highs of summer, or even spring for that matter. She could bear through it anyway, she was born into a cold world. The seventeenth of January in Maine was definitely not a sauna, more like the second ice age. And Chicago was just as freezing as New York. Jessica was made to walk through degrees in the low teens such as this. She would be able to stay out here for quite a while. And that was a good thing, for bumping against her leg was her violin case, and the instrument inside was the thing that she intended to practice in this place.
"I wonder how long I can last out here before my fingers fall off," Jessica giggled to herself as she settled her case onto one of the benches about mid-garden. Her palms and about to mid-finger were covered in gloves, the dark blue wool ending there so that she could play without interference. Her cool fingers unlatched the case, opening to the velvety softness that kept her violin from smacking against the metal and cracking in two. Her face lit up when she saw the instrument, fingers ran a smooth line down the honey brown wood before lifting it from its soft cradle. After that came the bow, though it was ignored until she adjusted her head just right against the violin's chin catcher. She smiled at the connection and let another sweet sigh fall from her lips, one that created a quiet cloud of white wisp that her closed eyes could not catch.
And then the bow settled against the strings, her fingers pressed against the top set of violin threads and she began her playing, losing herself and the time to the sweet melody of the violin she simply loved.
