washing you out of my hair and out of my mind
---------------------------------
erika o'brien wasn't really one to do projects. at least in groups. she was perfectly capable of doing projects on her own. but of course stupid teachers often paired people up, and erika was stuck with some quiet girl named emma. she had nothing against the girl, yet, but still; erika wasn't a fan of group projects. she even begged to work alone, but that failed; so she was stuck working with this emma girl. she'd proven to be a nice girl, not too judgemental, and was overall decent. erika could see herself being somewhat friends with her. so, as they got acquainted, emma had suggested that erika come to her apartment to work on the powerpoint presentation. and since erika's dormmate had her boyfriend over almost more often than she was even in the dorm, she thought that was a good idea.
so friday afternoon, after classes, she had called emma asking if they could work that night. emma said that was fine, but she'd be out working till about seven or so. she mentioned a roommate with her apartment, but emma said that he'd probably let her in and let her wait there. she had a guy roommate? she didn't know this; maybe this wouldn't be a complete waste, erika thought as she walked down the street. it wasn't that cold out, in her opinion; it was nearing the end of february, so of course the weather was warming up. she could still see that parents were bundling the kids up so that they didn't get frost bite or whatever, and she laughed at that; not really at the kids, but the parents' overprotectiveness over them. but at the same time she thought it was cute.
thinking of kids and parents, she was reminded of her last real relationship with garret dublin. they'd actually been pretty good together; the only problem was that he didn't really even bother telling her a big part of his life? his daughter kaylee. in all honesty, if garret had shown her kaylee during their relationship, she didn't know how she'd have reacted. probably not like a guy who was dating a girl with a baby, no doubt; she thought kaylee was a gorgeous girl when she first saw her. kaylee wasn't the reason she'd broken up with garret; it was garret's stupidity of not telling her about a big part of his life. so every so often when she'd gone out, she'd see kaylee and garret together, and the girl recognized her. she didn't mind it so much; just the fact that garret seemed to glare whenever kaylee ran to her. or maybe that was just her imagination. so, needless to say, the two hated each other with a passion now.
feeling her phone vibrate in her pocket, she pulled out. first seeing that it was about an hour to six, she felt she was early, but whatever. maybe it would make good to meet emma's roommate. in fact, the text itself was from emma, telling her that she could go there, that she warned her roommate that she had a friend coming over to work on a project. that was good; that wouldn't make things too awkward when she just randomly showed up. texting her back saying that was cool, she slipped her phone into her pocket before hitching her bag higher up on her shoulder. soon, she was reaching the apartments, and she looked at the text she'd gotten to see what apartment was emma's. the number seemed familiar...but she couldn't quite figure out where it was from. oh well; maybe it was someone else's dorm room at the school or something she was thinking about.
looking up, she realized she'd just about walked past emma's apartment. laughing at herself, she walked up the stairs, the wind blowing her hair wildly around her face. smoothing it down as she reached the door, she raised a hand, knocking on the door three times. putting her phone in her pocket, she hitched her bag higher, waiting for someone to open the door. she hoped to dear God that it wasn't some joke, that there was nobody there, or worse, a random apartment. she'd feel pretty darn stupid, then bitch at that emma girl. but hearing the door open, she didn't look up from glancing around. "hey, i'm erika, i'm here to work on a project with em---" she looked up, and seeing the last face she wanted to see, she made a face of her own. her own slightly friendly smile turning down into a scowl, she sighed as she saw garret standing there. "emma's your roommate?"
