for every student, the week dragged. it was a widely known fact; everyone went through their week as best they could, anxiously waiting for classes to be over on friday afternoon. once that last bell rang, it was the moment of freedom. once the last bell rang, students brains stopped thinking about their math or english or history or whatever other classes they were taking and started focusing on their plans for the upcoming weekend. once the last bell rang, students prepared for a good day or so of little to no sleep. once the last bell rang, the possibilities were endless.
to dakota travis, it seemed like that last bell would never ring. the week hadn't been the best, full of tests and countless hours of homework, and the only thing she wanted was to be able to relax for a day or so. her last class of the week was the worst, and it took everything she had to keep herself from dozing off. she forced herself to listen to the teacher, even if the information he was giving went in one ear and out the other. academic classes were the worst part of the day, by far.
finally, that annoying buzzing sound of the bell filled the room. kota was the first one to jump out of her seat and be out the door. she didn't have any plans, at least not yet, but that wouldn't stop her from having a good time this weekend. she didn't have to work friday night, saturday, OR sunday, which was a definite plus. usually she had to plan around at least one day of working in the weekend, make sure she wasn't completely hungover going in. but this week, she'd managed to put in all her weekly hours after school or at night on weekdays, so she was free to do whatever she wanted and not have to worry about getting fired.
after a while of contemplating just what to do this weekend, she picked up her cell phone and called jayden. there was a new movie coming out, she couldn't remember the name, but she wanted to see it. friday nights were always the more mellow of the weekend nights; saturday nights were crazy. she convinced jayden to go to the movie with her, and snapped her phone shut. it wouldn't be the most exciting of nights, of course, but it would be fun. she liked spending time with jayden, and you couldn't go out to a party every night.
the movie started at seven forty-five, and because she had nothing else to do, she got to the theater at around seven fifteen. it was early, she knew, but she wasn't sure just how popular this movie was, and she wanted to make sure that both she and jayden got to see it. she bought two tickets at the ticket booth; jayden could just pay her back when she got there. stuffing both tickets in her pocket, she walked over to a bench by the door of the movie theaters and waited. her friend would be there within ten minutes, she was willing to bet.
after about five minutes of waiting, she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket; a text message. she glanced at it quickly and sighed with discontent. apparently, jayden was sick, and couldn't make it to the movie. fan-fucking-tastic. irritated, she stuffed her phone back in her pocket. it wasn't jayden's fault, obviously; you can't help when you get sick. still, here she was, alone on a friday night at the movie theater, with an extra ticket and no one to take it. the ideal friday night? i think not.

------------------------------------------------
joey had spent a majority of the day in his dorm. he hadn't had work that day, so after classes he'd tried to hang out with somebody, garret or anyone. no one was free; garret had to watch kaylee because emma was out with addie and kaleb with wedding stuff, and his cousin was out with some kid. so garret wasn't free. so joey had been alone all day, and that made him sad, and slightly angry. he'd done everything he could think of; worked on his piece for art, practice for the band a bit, and everything. he just didn't understand it; why was he the one that didn't have a life? that just made him very sad indeed.
but he'd gotten a call from work, saying that he should have come in that day and pick up his paycheck. he was glad for that; he needed money, bad. he was pretty low, and he'd only worked two days that week, but still; it was better than no money. he would have had to wait till later that night though. his boss rhonda was the one that handed out checks, and she wouldn't have been there till later that night. so, he decided to at least make himself look decent; maybe he would go visit garret after he got his paycheck. in fact, he texted garret, warning him that he might visit later that night. garret didn't reply right away, but he figured he would soon.
changing out of his shorts and t-shirt to a pair of jeans and a hoodie, he grabbed his keys and wallet and walked out the door. taking the stairs, two at a time. opening the front doors, he let wind blast his face as he walked towards his car on the other side of the parking lot. why the hell did he always do that, he didn't know; it meant he'd have to walk farther in cold weather and freeze to death. he frowned at that thought; he was a guy that got easily cold, which isn't exactly a common thing in the world. but whatever; he wasn't exactly a normal guy.
getting to his car, he got in, starting it up and almost immediately turning up the heat. backing out of the parking lot, he drove towards the movie theater. during the ten minute ride he was thinking of what else he could do, but he couldn't exactly think of anything else besides showing up at garret's and playing with kaylee. that girl was getting so big, but still adorable. he hadn't seen her in a while, and he was certain she would probably jump him the minute he showed up there, squealing 'uncle joey!'. though, with how she said it, it would sound like 'uncle joweeyyy', and that just sounded like the most damn adorable thing ever.
in his thinking, he was about to drive past the theater. stopping, he turned into the parking lot, parking relatively close to the entrance; he wouldn't be there long. he checked his watch; it was about seven thirty, so he'd probably see rhonda sometime soon. getting out of his car, he shivered; it had probably dropped ten degrees since he left his apartment. going towards the theater, he quickly opened the door and walked in. he looked around; it wasn't too crowded that night, thankfully. he was about to glance around for his boss when he heard her shout his name.
“joseph! there you are!” he rubbed his teeth together; the only thing that irked him about that woman was that she refused to call him joey, and always called him by his full name, which he hated. but he put a smile on his face as she came over, rambling about god knows what. handing him his check, she told him to be there tomorrow around three. he nodded, saying bye and waving. he turned around, ready to leave, when he saw dakota travis sitting on a bnech near the doors. he raised an eyebrow slightly; what was she doing alone, he wondered. walking over slowly, he sat down, his hands still in his pockets, freezing.
“hm....didn't think it was that fun to stare out a window for so long staring at the people walking into the theater.” he grinned at her; sure, him and dakota weren't exactly best friends, but they were some kind of friends. “so what're you doing here alone?”

it only took a few seconds for what could have been a pretty enjoyable friday night to turn into a complete waste of time, not to mention money. she should have thought smarter; after all, there weren't too many people in the theater to beging with. why she had to be all paranoid and by jayden's ticket ahead of time, she didn't know. didn't things always happen that way? the one time she decided to be smart and make sure both she and her friend could get into the movie without trouble, her plan backfired. typical.
whatever; there had to be someone else she knew who wanted to go to the movies on a friday night. someone else without a life, someone else who wanted to see the same movie she'd already gotten a ticket for, maybe with a group of people that she could join. or maybe someone who came alone; a chance to make friends with someone she'd only been acquaintances before. that was a promising idea. and if she couldn't find anyone she knew, she could always sell the two tickets at the front of the door, like a creepy scalper at a concert.
while she waited, she watched. there was always a chance that someone she knew was there already, waiting for someone else to pop up with an extra movie ticket and some interesting conversation. even if they were boring, she could deal with it. she was an actress, after all, and she'd learned to act interested; it was, of course, the only way she could get through half of her classes. then there was the possibility that whoever happened to be here on this friday night actually was interesting, although she knew those chances were slim to none. they probably wouldn't be here alone if that were the case.
somewhere behind her, she heard a shrill voice yell something to someone named joseph, and she rolled her eyes. it was probably some grandmother, maybe seeing her grandson for the first time in a while. maybe it was an aunt with her nephew. maybe they weren't related at all; she didn't know. there were a few grandparents and grandchildren around, she noticed, as well as some mothers and little children. there were a bunch of other people here, too; the groups of slutty high school girls with their too-v neck shirts and skirts that are way too short for february, and groups of kids with their baggie pants and overly-huge tee shirts. this was going to be fun.
she was still examining the groups of people inside and out of the theater when she heard talking, coming from someone who'd joined her on the bench. she looked over at joey craemer, and smiled. joey was a promising candidate; it'd definitely be an interesting friday. she sighed before explaining. "jayden and i had plans to come here, so i got here early and bought our tickets so the movie wouldn't sell out. but right after i did that, i got a text from her telling me she was sick and can't make it, so now i'm here, probably looking like a loser by myself, with two tickets to a move." she paused. "do you, by any chance, have any interest in going to see a movie?"

------------------------------------------------ he couldn't actually believe he was sitting next to dakota. they weren't exactly best friends. in fact he rarely talked to her unless they were in the company of one of their mutual friends. so it was quite weird. but he honestly didn't mind in any way possible. she probably did think he was a bit quiet, and he didn't blame her. but as he thought back, he knew that he was way more outspoken than how he'd been during his high school days. he'd grown out of his shell quite a lot.
hearing her plans, he nodded. he hated when that happened. it'd happened quite a lot with garret. not really the fact of him being sick, but having to take care of kaylee and couldn't make it. hearing her question, he pulled himself out of his little reminiscence phase as he looked at her. “uh, no. i have nothing. i just came here to pick up my paycheck, and then try and find something to do. i've been pretty plan-less all day, really.” he grinned at her. “so what movie were you planning on seeing?”
he wouldn't really care about what movie they watched. it honestly would have been better than being alone and doing nothing for the rest of the day. so he stood up, maybe a bit more excitedly than he normally would have. but he calmed himself down, standing up more controllably than before. “do you want to like, get something to eat or drink before we head in? i'm sure we can get something for cheap. my buddy jim's probably working tonight, so he might actually decide to be nice and let me not pay. plus, i'm sure rhonda wouldn't mind.” he accented her name quite clearly; the woman honestly irked, and scared, the crap out of him. it was honestly like garret's boss liz. in fact, both of them were almost certain rhonda and liz knew each other. that would be the only way that they could both get creepy pedophile-like women for bosses.
speak of the devil. soon enough joey heard the voice he'd heard not ten minutes ago. “joseph? still here? is there something else you need?” how the woman could sound to pleased to have him stay. he turned around, hitching the normal shy smile on his face. “uhm, no, nothing. i'm just...on a date!” he gestured towards dakota, who was still sitting down. “we were just talking before the movie started.” he turned to her, begging with his eyes for her to go along with it. “you got the tickets, right kota?” he gave her a nervous smile before turning back to rhonda. “all right hon. then you and your girlfriend have fun.” she started to walk off before joey could say anything.
turning back to her, he laughed nervously. “i'm sorry. she's just....oh i can't even describe her at all...like.”

the idea of hanging out with joey actually didn’t seem like a bad one. she was all for getting to know people better, making new friends, and she and joey didn’t exactly know each other well. true, they'd hung out before, but only in groups of friends that the two of them shared. never before had it just been the two of them, but it looked like that was about to change. and maybe she'd get him to be louder. the few times she'd hung around with him before, he'd seemed quiet and not very social, and she was exactly the opposite. maybe a bit of her would rub off on him; it wouldn't be a bad thing by any means. college students NEED to be loud and goofy sometimes.
she hated when plans changed, even if it wasn't the other persons fault in the slightest. like in this situation, she didn't blame jayden at all, but still, it sucked to have plans canceled, especially this time. joey must have known how it felt; she'd heard he was good friends with garret dublin. dakota didn't exactly know the boy too well, but she knew enough about him to know he had a daughter. that fact alone must keep him from going out all the time, and it must have sucked for joey. maybe that was why he, like her, was at the movies alone on a friday night. she pulled the tickets out of her pocket and showed them to him, shrugging. "i saw the commercial on tv; i thought it looked pretty good."
watching him stand up, she remained seated. the movie didn't start for another fifteen minutes, so they still had plenty of time to get drinks and food and other movie necessities before they missed even the commercials for upcoming movies. she heard a bit of excitement in his voice, and she wondered if he thought this would be as worthwhile as she did. it gave them both something to do, right? she smiled up at him from the bench. "free stuff, maybe? nice. i never turn down free food."
again came the shrill voice she'd heard earlier, and she saw an older-looking woman start walking towards them, all the while talking to "joseph". she smiled to herself; this was quite amusing. she heard him say he was on a date, and she looked up at him, almost giving him a curious look. she saw his face, though, and she knew it was only to get rid of this woman, who she assumed was his boss. time to put that acting major to work. "of course i do, honey!" she said, jumping up and putting on her dumb-blonde-teenager voice. it always worked. when the woman turned around and started walking away, she waved frantically and called to her. "nice meeting you!" she yelled, keeping up the charade.
once the woman was far enough away that she was sure she wouldn't be able to hear, she let out a laugh. "don't worry about it. i understand." she said, still laughing a bit. "oh, and sorry about the whole honey thing. i had to make it convincing, you know?"
