Usually the Clementine Gardens was a place most people went to during the daytime to hang out with friends in between class periods, for lunch, or study but not for Miranda Crise. You wouldn’t dare catch her there at a time where everyone is, she prefers to be there around midnight when you can be almost certain there won’t be anyone there to bother you. It wasn’t that she was anti social, she really is quite the people person, but she found it to be the perfect place to go and think. Perhaps she should have thought it over a bit more this time however as it was rather chilly outside and the hoodie she was wearing wasn’t exactly the warmest article of clothing. She shivered slightly in the cool air, but it did nothing to make her want to leave. She allowed herself a spot on the ground away from most of the trees and brought her knees to her chest wrapping her arms around them. She sighed as she tilted her up to look at the sky; at least it really was a pretty night.
For the life of her she couldn’t understand why she’d ever really want to think about anything as whenever she did it was always about either Garret and Kaylee or Dexter and both weren’t exactly the most happy of subjects. Maybe she simply knew that she deserved to think such thoughts, after all it was all her fault. She could have had her life set with Garret and Kaylee, they had both been hers for the taking but she had thrown them away in a fit of uncertainty and hadn’t had the guts to go back and admit her wrongs. The only thing for certain in her mind was that they were better off without her; she would’ve been a rotten mother. That didn’t stop her from going after them now though; she was growing too selfish to stay away any longer. They didn’t need her but she needed them; more than anything.
As for the subject of Dexter, her beloved brother who had passed away all too soon, it was almost unbearable to think of. She couldn’t find a way to blame herself for this one though, after all she wasn’t capable of branding someone was cancer but she should have done something better. He had always wanted to know Kaylee but she had asked him to stay away until she could get things sorted out. Of course, she hadn’t known that things wouldn’t be sorted out before his death and she hated herself more for it every day. Why did she have to be so damn selfish?
Miranda blinked a couple times as she focused her attention on the dark sky above her, trying her damnest to keep the tears from flowing. She hated to cry, even in privacy, it always made her feel weak and pathetic. After what had seemed like forever, she swore she had heard a noise in the distance. Her eyes darted around her surroundings but for a moment she saw nothing and allowed herself to assume it had all been in her head not knowing that she was finally about to see the boy she had been searching for.

Time I've been patient for so long How can I pretend to be so strong? Looking at you, baby Feeling it too, baby If I'm asking you to hold me tight Then it's gonna be all right
These days Garret Dublin didn't find himself with much alone time. Between raising his daughter, attending classes, doing homework, and pulling double shifts over at La Bella Vista Garret barley had time to breathe. But tonight was different. His homework was all done, he had gotten off of work early, and Audrina and Emma had taken Kaylee out. For once, Garret found himself alone. He really didn't know what to do with himself.
Opening the door to his quiet apartment, Garret ditched his coat and keys and headed to the bathroom to shower the smell of food off his body. He wasn’t exactly sure what to do with this sudden gift of momentary freedom. Throwing on a shirt and his favorite pair of jeans, Garret threw some gel in his hair, grabbed a jacket and his guitar case and headed out the door. He had found the perfect place to play his guitar, and that place was the Clementine Gardens on the campus of school. It was always packed during the day, but he had found it was usually empty during the night.
As he made his way across the street, and onto the school grounds, he found himself thinking of Miranda Crise. Most people didn't know about her, they just knew that Kaylee’s mom wasn’t in the picture. Only four of Garrets friends really knew anything about the girl, and they knew not to bring her up. Miranda was still a very painful subject for Garret, even three years later. This was the girl who still had his heart, and probably always was. He had planned on spending the rest of his life with her. But after he got full custody of Kaylee, he hadn’t heard from her at all. Her parents had contacted him once since that day, to see how their granddaughter was doing, and to tell him about Dexter’s death. He was sad that he missed the funeral, but he knew he probably wouldn’t have went anyway, Miranda would have been there. Garret had considered Dexter a friend when Miranda and him were dating, so Garret had went out to Dexter’s grave and paid his respects and left flowers, but that's the last time he was anywhere near a place where he thought he would run into Miranda.
He ignored the pain that rippled through his chest at the mere thought of Miranda, and tried to push her out of his mind, but he couldn’t. He started wondering where she was at the moment, wondering if she was happy, if she had moved on like he tried so hard to do, if she had a new man in her life, or even wondering if she was happily married. The possibility of the last one was very great. Miranda was a gorgeous girl, with a wonderful personality and a heart full of love, she was quite the catch, and he would know.
He was now entering the Clementine Gardens. He made his way back to his favorite spot, but the closer he got, the more apparent it was that someone was occupying his favorite seat. He frowned, curious as to who it was. He took a few steps closer and then stopped dead in his tracks. No…No no no no no no no. It couldn’t be, not her. He was imagining things. Miranda Isabella Crise could not be here, sitting in his seat. He could see the tears that were slowly falling from her eyes, and he could see her shiver slightly from the cold. He felt the pain rippling through his chest at the site of her, but it hurt more to see her cold and crying. Making himself visible, he stepped out of the shadows and into the light of the moon. Taking off his coat and setting his guitar case down, he walked over and draped his coat around her shoulders and kneeled down in front of her. “Miranda…What are you doing? Why are you here”

It wasn’t long before the source of the noise was throwing their jacket around her shoulders and Miranda couldn’t help but feel like an idiot. Her hands met with her eyes before she even had a chance to look at her savior, she couldn’t stand the thought of a stranger seeing her cry. She hated it enough when people she was close to saw her crying. She opened her mouth to speak but failed once she caught Garret staring back at her, ”Um…” She began lamely afterwards her teeth meeting with her bottom lip. Garret Dublin was kneeling down directly in front of her and she had no idea on what to do about it. She had practiced numerous times on what she was say to him once she had finally found her and now that he had found her all she could say was um? This had to be the worst way possible for them to see one another again.
Hearing his question, Miranda blinked a couple times. There was no right answer to his question and she knew that. She didn’t quite understand it herself, there was no way he would want her in his life after what she had done to him and their daughter. He likely would just tell her to go back home and leave both him and Kaylee alone because that was what she deserved. Why had she ever thought she had a chance at either of them after what she had done? Garret had probably moved on a long time ago and why shouldn’t he have? She hurt him. He could do so much better, he always could have. ”I just….Look Garret I know this is stupid…” She began hoping something better would come to her. Shit. ”Leaving you and Kaylee was stupid, okay? It was the most selfish thing I’ve ever done, but I swear there hasn’t been a day since I left that I haven’t wanted to come crawling back…” She finished, knowing what question was going to come next. She also knew she wasn’t going to have the right answer to that question.
Running a hand through her hair, she forced her chocolate brown eyes to collide with his. ”I’m sorry Gar, I am so fucking sorry.” Miranda said, feeling the tears already coming back to her eyes. She hated that she was such a mess, she hated even more that she was being such a mess in front of him. All she wanted to do was to be able to crawl into his arms and be held until all the pain went away but that wasn’t something she deserved or would get. Hell, the fact that he had given her his jacket was enough to make her world spin. He was the sweetest man to ever exist and she loved him for it. She just wished she could take it all back and go back to the way they used to be. Or not back to the way they used to be; back to the day when she had to make her decision. All she wanted to do was change it…

Time I've been patient for so long How can I pretend to be so strong? Looking at you, baby Feeling it too, baby If I'm asking you to hold me tight Then it's gonna be all right
Garret waited expectantly, not realizing that Miranda hadn’t really noticed he wasn’t just a stranger, but it was him. He watched, slightly confused as she went to say something, but stopped herself and just said ‘ummm’. He wasn’t sure what to think. Was it a good ummm? As in she was glad to see him? Or was it bad? Did she not expect to ever run into him? Damn, how did the girl still do this to him? Even after all he had went through, he still wanted to pull her tiny frame into his and just hold her until everything was better. He knew he couldn’t though. Maybe if he didn’t have Kaylee to consider, he would have. But Garret was not going to try to forgive and forget. God, how he still loved Miranda, but who knew when she would get tired of him again? He couldn’t let her back into Kaylee’s life if he wasn’t sure she was going to stay. It would only hurt Kaylee more to know her mother didn’t want her.
It was hard for Garret to just sit there and watch her look the way she did, almost helpless looking. Every part of him wanted to tell her things would be okay, that there was no reason to cry, but he couldn’t bring himself to say those words. He was torn between doing what he needed to do to protect himself and Kaylee, and doing what he wanted to do, which was beg Miranda to come back to him. What he needed to do was to tell her that she wasn’t wanted, even if that was the biggest lie that would ever be told. She was very much wanted. He needed to tell her to leave, that her being here was only going to hurt him and Kaylee more, but he was too selfish to do that. Now that he knew she was so close to him, he couldn’t bare the thought of telling her to leave. Well, if he was going to be selfish and not protect himself from the pain that would come, he at least needed to protect his daughter…well…their daughter. He listened to Miranda, all the while wondering exactly why she was back here, and secretly wondering if she just needed something, but hoping she was here for him. When Miranda said that leaving Kaylee and him was stupid and the most selfish thing she’d ever done, and she had wanted to come crawling back. Now he was defiantly thrown for a loop. If she had wanted to come back so badly, then why hadn’t she? Was she just playing him? He frowned for a moment, and then looked at her, “If you wanted to come crawling back so bad, then why haven’t you? Its been four fucking years Miranda. Four! Not a call, a text, a letter, you didn’t even send your daughter a birthday card. That really doesn’t sound like you wanted to come crawling back.” he said, a little more harshly than he had planned on it, but this was his way of letting some of his pain out.
When her eyes met his, he had to look away. He couldn’t let himself feel the way he was feeling right now. It wasn’t fair to Jayden. He stared at her for a moment, then simply said “I am too Miranda. I’m sorry that you ever left. I’m sorry that Kaylee is growing up without her real mother. I’m sorry that its taken you this long to figure out your mistakes. I’m sorry that I still don’t understand why you are here. And I am really sorry that I don’t care. I’m sorry I’ve moved on.” he said, with his voice cracking at the last part. He was true…yet a lie. He did care that she was back, and he hadn’t moved, but yet he had. He was now with Jayden Weir, and he pretty much liked the girl. He turned away from her, not wanting to see the tears that were already falling from before, and not wanting to see any new ones that would form. As if she knew that she was being talked about, Garrets phone starting ringing. He looked down at the caller ID and saw it was Jayden. Picking the phone up he said “Hey love, I’m kind of in the middle of something. I’ll call you back in a little while. Okay? –pause- I love you too. Bye.” hanging up the phone, “I need a cigarette” he mutter pulling out his pack of cigarettes, and lighting one. Under normal circumstances, he would have never smoked around another person unless they smoked as well. But under these circumstances, he needed to smoke. Taking a drag, he slowly let the smoke out before turning back to Miranda. “I’m really fucking sorry too.”

The word, not even the word, the sound she had made played over and over in her mind. It had been four long years since she had made the stupid ass decision to allow Garret to get custody of Kaylee whilst she selfishly stayed behind. She really had regretted everything the moment their baby was in his custody and she pushed them out the door but she hadn’t gone back on it. Miranda really had been under the illusion that she couldn’t go back on it, after all who was to say that he would even want her back after all that she had put him through? That was something she would never tell him though, he deserved to think the worst of her and she was half tempted to make herself look even worse. She didn’t want to make him even feel the tiniest bit of guilt for her, she wouldn’t have deserved that from anyone she just wanted to be in their lives again. Her chocolate brown eyes stayed glued to the ground as looking at Garret hurt more than just about anything in the world. She couldn’t bear the thoughts of what she had done to him and their child, she hadn’t just ruined her own life…she had messed up theirs as well and the chances of her being able to even get a chance at fixing that seemed slim.
Miranda’s teeth sunk into her bottom lip as Garret responded to her lame attempt at words, she knew she deserved this after all she had done. He had probably been waiting for a way to vent his anger out on her for the longest time by now, she sure as hell would have been if she had been put into his place instead of her own anyway. She forced tears not to fall down as they were the last thing he needed to see right now, she deserved all of this and how no right in hell to cry about it. ”I know…you’re right…” The words came out in an barely audible tone, ”I don’t have an answer to that, I don’t why I didn’t come back other than that I was stupid and afraid. I don’t have any right to be here but I had to try Garret.” She said, forcing herself to look up at him while she was speaking afterwards looking back down and running her hands through her hair. She had tried to write or call or do at least something but every single time she tried she ended up tearing the letter or hanging up the phone realizing just how lame what she was doing was. She was truly regretting those decisions right about now.
This time it was even harder to hold the tears back when they so desperately wanted to flow until she had none left to cry. It was obvious that he needed to let out his suppressed anger and she wasn’t going to ruin that for him. She blinked a few times when he said he moved on, he couldn’t be seeing someone else, could he? Miranda had never given a single thought to moving on from Garret but it was obvious that he hadn’t done the same. And why should he have? She deserved this and she knew it. That didn’t make it any easier though, ”You have a girlfriend…” She stated stupidly, trying to force herself to get used to the idea. She didn’t have much of a chance at saying anything else as Garret’s phone rang not even a moment later. It was obviously his girlfriend; she didn’t even have a chance to notice that the girl’s name was Jayden as he told the girl on the other line that he loved her. He was in love with someone else? Her Garret was in love. No, that wasn’t a fair thought process; he had every right to be in love with someone else he wasn’t hers anymore she just simply his, forever. She couldn’t stop herself from crying but she tried her hardest not to let it show in her words, ”It’s good that you’ve moved on Gar, you could have always done better…not that anyone is good enough for you.” She said, immediately regretting it afterwards. She couldn’t say things like that to him, it wasn’t fair. ”I’m sorry I shouldn’t have said that…” She continued, ”Okay so it’s obvious that there’s no hope for us anymore but what about our daughter…Garret please just let me see her. You don’t even have to tell her who I am…” She begged, pushing her tears away with her hand before looking him in the eye. As Garret began to smoke however she had to look away, she didn’t know what it was about it but for some reason with a cigarette in his mouth that boy was damn sexy.
