rain pounded on the window of the dorm room that chelsi leland spent most of her weekend in. her roommate, addison, was no where to be found, as was usual for a saturday. half the time, chelsi was absolutely positive that she was one of the only people who would rather stay locked in the dorms than go out on the weekends. she felt no need to go out and party; she needed all the energy she could to get up and dance on the school days. to her, wasting a good day of dance was like an actor wasting an opportunity to be in a blockbuster movie.
after a while, though, she couldn't take the constant 'drop, drop, drop' of the rain against her window. she jumped up off her bed and searched the dorm for something to do. her iPod sat charging by her laptop, and she knew if she took it out, it wouldn't last more than a half an hour. she couldn't go and work out without listening to music while she did it, so going to work out was definitely out of the question. she scanned the room quickly for addie's iPod; surely her roommate wouldn't mind. still, it was nowhere to be found, probably with her wherever she was. so much for that.
she half-skipped over to her desk, looking through the drawers for something that looked interesting. there were a few board games there, half hidden under stacks of papers that she probably didn't need anymore. twister, life, monopoly, clue; all games that required at least one other player. she sulked back to the other side of the room, still scanning. she dropped to her knees and looked under her bed, and the only thing she dragged out was a shoe box of old books. she looked through them quickly; each of them she'd read at least four times before. she used to have plenty of extra time for reading, but the more time she spent dancing, the less time she had for anything else. that gave her an idea; why not catch up on reading? she loved sitting on a sofa or comfy chair and curling up with a blanket and a good book, and she hadn't had time to do that in a while.
now to search for a book. she got herself up from the floor and walked to the small closet, where the box of her books sat covered by winter jackets and bags of discarded spring clothes. she yanked it out of it's spot, pulling with all her strength, and sat cross-legged in front of it. she examined each book carefully, trying to see if she could remember the events of it and how many times she'd read it before. all the books she'd brought with her to college were her favorites, the ones she'd read at least five times each. addie wouldn't have any books that interested her, so she decided her best bet was to put on her scarf and jacket and take a drive over to borders.
driving wasn't exactly her strong point; she'd rather walk or run somewhere, as long as the length wasn't completely outrageous. she hated driving in any sort of bad weather, but she couldn't stay in her dorm with nothing to do. when she pulled into an empty parking space in border's parking lot less than five minutes after getting in the car, she was extremely proud of herself. she ran to the doorway, hands shielding her head, and got inside within seconds.
borders wasn't her favorite bookstore in the world; that was a place in her heart occupied by only barnes and noble. a bookstore was a bookstore, but it helped if you knew your way around, which she didn't. she stumbled around the different book sections, looking for a title or cover art that caught her eye. the more popular selections were in the front of the store, so she spent a few minutes browsing there before she moved towards the back.

"shut the fuck up!" he threw the alarm clock against the floor, groaning as he heard the infernal beeping finally stop. Well...that meant that he would have to get a new alarm clock. probably the fourth one that month. he was one that always attacked his alarm clocks. and the weird thing was he never set them himself...
that morning had been normal enough. he'd woken up at ten that morning, to find that it was raining. well, any hope of going out with the guys was killed; his friends hated going out in the rain, so whenever it rained gavin was on his own for a majority of the time. after getting changed and talking to his 'girlfriend' for a while, he decided 'hey, maybe i could clean my room'. which he did. for about an hour or so. but after that, he had nothing to do. so that's when he had decided to go get the book for her.
getting into his car for the five minute drive to borders, he ran in, his light brown hair dripping slightly. borders wasn't typically the place that gavin would spend his weekends. the only reason he was here was because the girl he'd been 'seeing' had a love for books, and he thought to earn a few points with her, he'd get her a good book or something. but he didn't know what the damn girl liked! they'd never really 'talked'; it was more of randomly hooking up an empty lecture hall sort of deal. but he thought what the hell, i'll be nice for a change and buy her something. but he didn't know what...so now he was wandering aimlessly through borders, not knowing what the hell he was searching for.
shaking his head, he walked through the doors, nodding at one of the guys he recognized from school that worked there. now, what would the girl like...he decided to explore the aisles and see. walking towards the young adult section, he looked at a few of the books there before he saw someone catch his eye. he smirked as he recognized the girl; chelsi leland was the resident 'baby girl' around. she'd heard she was one of the younger girl that had virtues and morals and such. he remembered a few nights earlier one of the guys in a drunken dare had dared him that he couldn't get the girl into bed. and he'd taken the bet; he just hadn't seen her around to actually attempt.
though now was a good a time as any. walking slowly, he leaned against the shelf next to her, his arms crossed, his signature smirk on his face. "i thought miss leland spent her days working on a new routine?" yes, he'd seen the girl work on a dance routine many weekends in the past. he knew she was pretty serious about that stuff. she was one of those typical good girls that never did anything bad. he'd never seen her at one of the many parties that had been around, nor had he seen her at the bar or anything. it was like the girl was a freaking saint! getting with her wasn't going to be an easy task, he knew now.
letting the smirk soften slightly into a semi-smile, he looked down at her. holding his hand out, he pretended to bow. "gavin barker, at your service." he said with a goofy grin. he straightened up before looking back down at her. jeez, she was a tiny ass thing. a tiny adorable ass thing though. "so, why're you here, really?" he started walking beside her; he doubted she minded his presence.

chelsi rarely went to a book store with a definite idea of what book she was going to leave with. she was a browser; she'd rather walk around for a few minutes and look at all her choices before she settled on one. she walked slowly around the tables filled with books, occasionally picking one up and reading the back before either setting it back down or taking it with her to examine her other choices.
after ten minutes of browsing, she had two possible books in hand. one was 'the host' by the author of the twilight series, and the other was 'the book thief' by someone she'd never heard of. she'd never been one of those girls who was insanely obsessed with the twilight series; she'd read the books, sure, but they didn't impress her as much as some other books had. still, this one looked different and interesting. she hadn't heard of a book like it before
'the book thief' didn't look or sound quite as interesting as the other one, but she'd heard about it from a bunch of her friends. caty was in a book club back home, and she'd called her up the next day to talk all about this amazing book that she'd read. caty was a stereotypical nerd, but it was okay; she needed someone to talk about books with. she'd made her older sister promise that she'd read it in her spare time, and this was an opportunity for chelsi to fulfill her promise. still, she wasn't sure.
she heard someone start talking from close by her, but she didn't pay much attention to the voice. it was probably just someone talking to someone else that was near her; she was pretty sure borders wasn't exactly the most popular hang-out spot on weekends. it wasn't until she heard her last name that she really paid attention. a surprised look on her face, she turned her head to see who was talking to her. she knew she'd seen the boy around school, but his name escaped her. "everyone needs one day off." she said politely, giving him a smile.
she didn't want to be rude and ask the boys name, and she didn't have to; he introduced himself and bowed within a few seconds after she answered him. she giggled slightly; he looked ridiculous bowing in the middle of a bookstore. she tilted her head upwards so she could see him better; he was extremely tall, especially next to her four feet eleven inches. he asked her what she was doing there, and she shrugged. "well, i needed something to do, so i thought i'd catch up on my reading." she said simply. "what about you?" she asked.

he was sort of surprised she spoke in a polite tone to him. she didn't really know who the fuck he was, yet she was talking nicely. that was rare. "hm...that's true. you just never seemed like the type to take a break from working, you know?" he didn't want that to sound offensive in anyway, and hoped that it didn't.she really had never struck him as the type of person to take a day off from working. she seemed like one of those determined girls that wouldn't stop until she won an award for her routine or something like that.
hearing her giggle, he smirked lightly down at her. he knew that would get her smiling even more. this would be easy. watchign her tilt her head up to look at him, he raised an eyebrow before kneeling down. even on his knees he was her height! "does this help?" he managed to say the words before laughing slightly; that was weird. he never really had to bend down or kneel so somebody could speak to him. it was quite funny, in his mind. but he soon stood up again; his leg would've been asleep, and he probably would have fallen over if he even attempted to stand.
hearing her question, he looked down at her. "shopping. for my....my mother..." he made it kind of sound as though he were embarressed to actually be doing that, but he wasn't going to say he was shopping for his 'girlfriend'. he barely knew the girl's name! sure, she probably didn't know his either....wow, that was a great relationship. well, it was half truw what he told chelsi anyways; he was shopping. he started walking through the one aisle, motioning for her to follow. "you want to grab a coffee with me? i'll pay." he grinned a sideways grin at her; he'd been told it was freakishly adorable on him.
"come on, you know you want to. right across the street, perfect for when it rains..." he thought for a minute. "that sounds like it could be some cheesy ad for the starbucks across the street..." he got a thoughtful look on his face before he laughed. "buy yeah! come on; free coffee, and me. what else could be perfect?" he smirked at her, his tone teasing her lightly. he started walking towards the door; for some reason, he was very sure that she would come along. this was going to be way too easy. even the sex crazed girls his age and older probably weren't that easy. though he didn't want to think that just yet.

she raised any eyebrow when he told her that she didn't seem like she would take a day off. it wasn't because he offended her, and it wasn't because he was wrong; in fact, he was anything but wrong. she barely even knew his name and he seemed to know more about her than a lot of other people did; it was surprising. "i don't usually take breaks like this" she admitted. "but i thought that i'd go wild and crazy today and get away from the school. even if it's only a few minutes down the road."
she let out a loud peel of laughter when he kneeled down next to her, probably attempting to make it so that she didn't have to strain herself to look him in the face. still, even with him kneeling down, he was still only an inch or two shorter than she was standing up. "it does help a bit." she said, smiling at him. she felt almost like a child in this circumstance; adults kneeled next to their children when they were talking, not someone only a few years or so younger than them. "kneeling down like that might hurt your knees, though. i think i can survive looking up at you."
she smiled at him when he said he was shopping for his mother. "that's so sweet of you!" she said. not many people these days would go out shopping for their mothers, even if it was something as simple as going out to get them a book. from the few seconds she'd spent talking to him now and the times she remembered seeing him at school before, he didn't exactly seem like someone who would do that. still, that was why she tried so hard not to judge people before she knew them; she could get surprised in times like these. when he asked her to go get coffee, she was skeptical; she didn't know him well at all, and she wasn't one to just go out with strangers. "i don't know..." she said.
he started speaking again, and she grinned at his corny statement about starbucks. his offer was rather tempting; she was a regular at starbucks, and she hadn't had her daily cup of coffee yet that day. still, she didn't want to just jump the gun and start hanging out with someone she barely knew. but it was just coffee, and he seemed nice enough. he'd even managed to make her laugh on more than one occasion in less than five minutes; that called for some major good-points. she smiled at the ending to his statement. "getting a little cocky, are we?" she said, smirking at him. "sure, i guess. starbucks sounds nice." he'd already headed towards the door, so she put her books down on the nearest table and followed him. she could always come back and find them later.

he grinned down at her. "yeah, because everyone knows that going wild and crazy means spending an afternoon reading the latest Stephenie Meyer novel in Borders." he smirked at her, but he chuckled all the same. he had fun teasing her. how he knew her was a funny story in itself; there was one of his friends that had a cousin in the dance department. and he knew chelsi and told his cousin about her, and naturally, that cousin told him about her. the little seventeen year old that looked thirteen. in his eyes she did. but a cute thirteen year old nonetheless.
chuckling as she giggled as his attempt to be closer to her height, he stood as she spoke. "thank God. i don't feel like sitting like that for hours while we hang out." he smirked at her, wondering if she would correct what he said in anyway. he was actually going to look forward to getting to know her. that would probably allow her to actually spend more time with him. he wondered if she was one of those overly trusting type of girls. she looked like she would be, but you couldn't be certain by just looks, could you? take him for example; nobody would ever think of him as an arrogant, cocky player. though those words were harsh in his mind. though he couldn't think of a better one at the mometn.
hearing her exclamation, he raised an eyebrow at her. she believed that? wow. "yeah. my mom's...pretty awesome." he didn't want to kill this now; he didn't even know if his own mother was alive. the oman was never even around whenever he was little. she was probably dead for all he knew...he shook the thoughts out of his head, looking at her. "it's actually more for my grandmother than my mother. she loves reading books more than my mother does. and she doesn't leave the house much, so whenever i go visit i bring some stuff along for her." it was true; he was actually a sweetheart to his grandmother. he loved the woman. "you should meet her sometime. you'd like her." he smiled down at her before becoming extremely interested in the magazine rack.
he looked down at her as she probably considered going with him to starbucks. hearing her say she didn't know, he tried his little kid face that seemed to always work with everybody. but he didn't need it; hearing her question, he smirked at her. "only on rare occasions like going to starbucks with my new bestest friend." he chuckled at how stupid he sounded; probably like one of those kids cartoon shows where the actors turned out to be gay. he started his walk again, opening the door and holding it open for her. once they were both outside, he looked both ways, took her hand, and started sprinting across the street, ignoring the horns that were honking and the fist waves from old guys.
opening the door to starbucks, he let her go in first before he walked in himself. "now, let's get something to drink. i'm cold and wet." he frowned comically, shaking his hair, which was dripping down wet once again. he looked up to see an old woman shaking her head at him, and he just shrugged it off. going towards the counter, he spoke to the guy behind the counter. "yo. can i get a vanilla latte, and a...." he stopped, looking at chelsi. "what'dya want? i'll pay."

she smirked when he teased her idea of "wild and crazy", but she knew she probably sounded ridiculous. she just wasn't one to go out partying every chance she got; in fact, she didn't think she'd gone to one party once, not even while she was in high school. she'd heard of so many stories of people who'd done something that completely ruined their lives at a party, and she just didn't want that to happen to her. still, she respected people who thought of that as "fun"; she wasn't one to criticize other people. "okay, so many 'wild and crazy' isn't the right phrase..." she said, smiling. "but at least i'm not working!"
"i wouldn't make you do that. i don't want to be sued when your knees give out." she didn't miss when he said 'hours', though. so this little trip to starbucks was going to last hours? not that she objected in any way. she had nothing better to do, after all, so why pass up a perfectly good opportunity for a busy afternoon? and she always liked to get to know new people. she didn't know gavin very well at all, so it would be a great opportunity to get to know new people. he seemed to know her, so why shouldn't she know him?
he seemed a little uncomfortable saying something more about his mother, and she felt bad about saying something; even if he'd brought it up, he seemed uncomfortable now, so it obviously wasn't a good thing to elaborate on. when he said it was really for his grandmother, though, she smiled. she always loved hearing about people doing good things for their grandparents, just because she'd been so close to her own grandmother before she died. "oh, i see! that's nice; i was close to my grandmother, too."
when she said that she wasn't sure about going or not, he got the weirdest, cutest look on his face, like he was trying to convince her to go with him with cuteness. she laughed a bit, and then heard what else he said, and laughed a little more. "i'm your bestest friend now?" she asked, before walking outside with him. she wasn't expecting him to grab her hand and dart across the street the way he did, but it was hilarious watching to expressions of the people they'd just cut off.
he opened the door for her, and she walked in in front of him. she heard him say something about being cold and wet, and she smiled when he started shaking his hair. she laughed. "you look like a dog." she stated. it was true; dogs did that kind of thing all the time. she heard him ask what she wanted, and she glanced up at the menu. "um... a caramel latte?" she said, almost questioningly; she didn't want him to have to pay for her drink. "i can pay for it; you don't have to. saving me from boredom is enough."

he looked down at her, and he almost automatically could tell she wasn't one for partying. she had a certain...aura about her. call him mystical or just being plain stupid, but he could almost feel that she wasn't one for partying. she was too....innocent. surprisingly, he found that kind of adorable, but at the same time, he found it awkward. most of his friends were party-goers; he hadn't ever really talked to anyone that didn't party. it was just weird. ah well. maybe that would change one day. he laughed as she spoke. "yeah. if you were still working you wouldn't have run into little ol' me." he smirked down at her.
he laughed. "i wouldn't sue you. no lawyer would defend me. i'd never pay them for going to court." he laughed; it was true. he had a one track mind; it would take him YEARS to remember to pay anybody back. which is why most of his friends never lent him money; they wouldn't get it back till they were thirty and bald. "and they wouldn't give out! well..maybe. beign tall isn't helpful." but he grinned ; he liked being tall. he found that it was pretty wicked awesome being able to see over most peoples' heads. well, the girls anyways.
hearing her say she was close to her grandmother, he had the feeling she wasn't around anymore. he would have pressed further, but he felt like that was rude. shit, when the hell did he start caring? "oh. that's pretty awesome." he grinned down at her. he always wanted to punch the people that talked about their grandparents being old and weird and such. he loved his grandmother. the woman was the sweetest person that he'd ever met. if she died, he really didn't know what he would do with himself. probably not something good,t hat was for sure. but he was bought out of his little daydream moment when she asked that question. "yes, new bestest friend. got a problem with it?" he smirked down at her.
he looked down at her as she said he looked like a dog. "hey! i'm better than a dog." he tried to think of ways that he was, but he couldn't, which was kind of sad. he looked back down at her as he asked her what she wanted to order.hearing her say what she wanted in question form, he laughed as she said she could pay. "let me pay. i'm in a good mood, and i'm having fun. not that easy to do, young lady." he sounded like some professor saying that an algebra equation wasn't easy. he turned back to the guy in front of him. "one vanilla latte and a caramel latte?" he pulled out his wallet and handed off the exact amount before turning back to chelsi. "want to grab us a table while i get the drinks?"
he turned back around to face the counter, and it didn't actually take too long for the kid, probalby just a year older than him ( so he wouldn't really be a kid, right? ) bring him their order. nodding his head in thanks, he turned around, going towards their table. setting her drink down in front of her, he sat down across from her, almost immediately taking a sip of his own drink. "okay, now i'm warm." he grinned a wide grin at her.

she was pretty sure that gavin was exactly the opposite of her; in fact, she thought she remembered her friends that went to parties telling her about him on more than one ocassion. she couldn't remember the specifics, but that fact alone told her that he didn't exactly think like her. she didn't even know what his major at the school was. he probably thought she was weird; she was sure a lot of people did. a lot of teenagers thought it was their job to party and drink and sleep around and get in trouble, while she thought exactly the opposite. call her innocent, naive, childish; she didn't care. still, even if gavin was one of those who thought that partying was what he was supposed to do, she was having a good time with him now. "and then we'd both be bored and lonely. so i guess it's a good thing i decided not to work today."
she raised an eyebrow when he said that he probably wouldn't pay someone for defending him while in court. "i see." she said. "remind me never to attempt to defend you in a court of law." she laughed, knowing that it was more than likely that she sounded extremely stupid. it didn't bother her; she wasn't trying to impress anyone. "maybe your knees wouldn't give out right this second, but after a while of having to kneel down to be level with me, i'm sure it would only be a matter of time." she laughed again. "so maybe i should be the one to pay your lawyer."
a sad smile played on her lips when he said something about how awesome it was that she and her grandmother were close. whenever the topic of her grandmother came up, it always made her sad. it wasn't that she didn't want to talk about her gram; in fact, she wanted to talk about her much more than she actually did. her grandmother was a great lady, probably her best friend for a while, as corny as it sounded. she just missed the older woman a lot, and remembering that she was gone made her sad all over again. she attempted to chase away her sadness when he said something more about being "bestest friends", and she smiled genuinely. "no problems! you make friends pretty quickly, i guess."
she grinned more when he said that he was better than a dog. she reached up and attempted to pat his head, but when she couldn't reach she settled for his shoulder. "it's okay. not many people are as cool as dogs; i'd say dogs are much cooler than me." again, another stupid thing that came out of her mouth. passersby were probably looking at the two of them like they were psychotic, or at least her. but that was okay. she sighed when he said that he'd pay for her; she always felt guilty when others paid for her. still, she nodded and found a table for the two of them while he waited for their drinks.
it didn't take long at all for gavin to walk over to the table, two drinks in hand. she smiled up at him in thanks as he set the drink in front of her, and copied him by taking a sip within a few minutes of having the drink. she laughed a bit when he announced that he was warm, and she nodded again. "that's good." she said. she set the drink down by the side of the table nearest the wall. "okay." she said, folding her hands on the table in front of her. "i'm sorry if i seem really stupid for asking you this, but what major are you in at school again?"

he looked down at her, and once again he went back to thinking. damn he was doing that a lot today. but yeah. he knew how different they were. some of her friends were his friends at parties, and they often talked about how their friend chelsi absolutely refused to go to parties. in a way, he admired her, but at the same time he wondered what the heck was wrong with her. he honestly hadn't ever met a girl that didn't party. well, there were some out there, he just..never saw them. it was weird. he didn't know. "yes. and if i'm bored and lonely, then i would probably be bashing my head into your wall and stealing your crayons." he laughed at that last one; when he was little he would steal the other kids crayons because his sucked. course, he always got sent to the little corner to 'think about what he did' and then apologize. then do it again. it was a never ending cycle.
he laughed as she said that. he wasn't really laughing at her, as many would think he was. despite is naturally jackass like personality, he liked to laugh. it was fun to laugh for some reason. "exactly! i'd be able to get your money and your house and your toaster if you even tried suing me." he grinned a fake proud grin on his face, trying not to laugh. he was pretty weird like that. he pretended to be thinking. "if you make my knees break, you'll have to apologize to them and kiss them to make them feel better." he nodded as though he were serious and his words were final. hey, maybe they were; he wouldn't mind. "but you paying me wouldn't be half bad either..." he grinned, laughing slightly.
he looked at her and saw her smile, and he felt bad. damn, he didn't want her to feel bad. shit, that sucks. he thought for a minute, before deciding how to make her smile. "hey, come on. be a happy girl and smile. i'm not letting my bestest friend be sad." he nodded his head once more before hearing her. he grinned at her. "well.....yeah."
he couldn't help but laugh as she tried to pet his head, and failing to reach his head, petted his shoulder. still laughing slightly, he scrunched over a bit so that his head was at eye level with her. "better?" he grinned at her. "i doubt that. you seem way cooler than a dog. then i wouldn't be able to talk to you." he grinned a cheesy grin at her. he heard her sigh as he said he'd pay, and he couldn't help but chuckle lightly. he could automatically tell that she didn't want him to pay for her. oh well. he was in a good mood, and it was not going to be ruined. he looked at her as he sat down across from her. hearing her say that's good, he nodded at her. "course. that just means that i'll be in an even better mood than i already am." he took a sip of his drink before hearing her say okay. he looked up at her, and she looked so serious, he was almost afraid for something. almost. he looked at her, but hearing her question, he started laughing. really laughing. quite a first.
"is that why you look like you're telling me that i'm going to lose an arm or something?!" he couldn't stop laughing; he was quite relieved. for some reason he'd really thought bad news was on the way. takinga sip of his drink, he chuckled once before speaking. "graphics design. maybe the tiniest bit of interest in music, too. my grandparents always wanted me to go into music. i don't know, i guess that's another possibility for my future, but graphics design is my life." he grinned at her.

she raised her eyebrow at him when he said something about stealing her crayons. random much? she had to laugh, though, because as soon as he said that, the vision of gavin bashing his head on his wall and taking a random box of crayola crayons popped into her head. her brother had done that to her when they were little. she'd always had the big box of crayola crayons, given to her by her kindergarten teacher, and devon would stop at nothing to get that box instead of his box of crappy roseart crayons. It had caused many-a-fight between the normally close twins.
she smiled as he laughed. she dropped her jaw and pretended to be afraid. "my toaster!?" she said with mock fear. "please don't take my toaster! i wouldn't be able to go on!" she cracked a smile soon after, though, and nodded when he said she'd have to kiss his knees to make them feel better. "that seems like a reasonable demand. and you'll let me keep my toaster? you can keep my money and my house, but please don't take my toaster!" in reality, she didn't even think she had a toaster in her dorm. she'd never used one very much, so why have one? still, it was fun to joke around like this.
he said told her to smile, and she did; she smiled a wide, exaggerated smile, being sure to show as many of her teeth as her mouth would allow. "i am smiling. see?" she said, pointing directly at her face. it was sweet of him to care, or at least make her think that he cared. a lot of people would be uncomfortable and just move on to a new subject, but he actually made sure she smiled before doing so. it was nice.
he started laughing when she attempted to pat his head, and she let out a laugh as well. she always laughed at her own expense when it came to her height; she was more than aware that there were ten year olds who were taller than she was. she laughed again when he scrunched down, and patted his head like she was trying to do originally. "much." she said, grinning at him. she laughed when he said she seemed cooler than a dog. "really? i can't imagine how you came to that conclusion. i'm really not all that exciting."
when he burst into laughter, she couldn't help but be startled. he was laughing loudly, totally unexpected. in the past few minutes she'd heard him chuckle multiple times, but this boom of laughter was much different. she felt her cheeks flame up and she knew it was only a matter of seconds before her face was as red as a tomato. she bit her lip and shrugged when he asked her if that was why she looked like "he was going to loose an arm"; she didn't know she looked that serious. "i didn't know if it was something that i should know already or not. some people would get offended." she tried explaining, placing a hand on her face to try and take some of the heat away from her cheeks. she listened intently to his explanation. "that's nice." she said. "what type of music? like, do you play an instrument or sing? because you may just have to perform for me sometime."

he looked down at her as she let her jaw drop. hearing her, he looked down, trying not to laugh. hearing her, he retaliated with his own mock serious tone. "yes, your toaster! i know it's your whole reason of existance!" he let out a small chuckle as she talked once more. he pretended to think over her offer. "hm...i don't know, toasters are quite valuble as well, you know...." he took his time trying to think. "hm...fine. i'll let you keep your toaster this time." he nodded his head.
he couldn't help but grin as she smiled a huge smile at him. it was one of those big teeth showing smiles that little kids did all the time. it was pretty damn cute on her....dammit, stop that. he shook that 'cute' thought out of his head as she talked. "yes, yes, i see the smile." he grinned at her. "hm...i think somebody needs to get those pointy little ones fixed. unless you're planning on auditioning for a role as a vampire somewhere." he grinned at her teasingly.
hearin her laugh as he did, he looked at her, still chuckling slightly. she wasn't one that was self conscious about her height. he admired that. he knew how short people always wanted to be taller, and those few tall ones that wished to be shorter. she was fine with her height. kind of like how he was fine with his own height. he grinned as she petted his head before he stood up again to answer her question. "well, i can't talk to dogs. unless i'm crazy, but i don't want weird people coming at me with needles or anything, you know."
seeing her face turn red, he tried not to laugh, but he couldn't help it. he was finding that weirdly cute. it was quite odd. but he looked at her as she answered. "who would actually get offended to be asked their major if you just met them? don't worry about it. i don't take anything offensively; i don't have enough of a mind to do that." he smiled at her. he was wondering if he could get that blush back...that was cute, he had to admit. damn, gavin. stop thinking that.. he didn't really...like, like her. well, he didn't think. for now this was strictly winning a bet friendship. but he was finding himself liking this little girl....
hearing her, he shook his head. "nu-uh. no private concerts unless i get paid." he laughed. "but i sing. and i kind of play guitar at times." he shrugged as though it wasn't a big deal. his grandparents loved his music, even if he didn't find it particularly wonderful. though he would admit he was...decent at singing. he just wouldn't admit it to anyone that mattered. "now why would you want someone like me performing for you, huh?" he smirked at her before taking a sip of his drink, looking at her over the top of his cup.

she knew it wasn't long before she started cracking up laughing with the whole toaster charade, so she cracked a smile before she could ruin it against her will. she recovered her expression quickly and brought back her "serious face". "it is!" she exclaimed. "i don't know how i'll be able to go on in life without my beloved toaster!" she listened to what else he had to say, and did a little victory dance when he said he'd let her keep her toaster. "yes! i guess i'll have to be careful from now on, though. one more bad move, and i'm thinking you'll officially have custody of my lovely toaster."
she gave him a thumbs up when he told her that he did in fact see her smile. it was childish, and she knew it, but she didn't want him to think she was, like, depressed or something. in all honesty, it was a rare moment that she wasn't smiling. there was no way he could know that, though, considering this was really the first time they'd had an actual conversation. she laughed and covered her mouth with her hand. "oh darn, you weren't supposed to see those." she said jokingly. "now you'll ruin my master plan for world domination."
she'd always thought it was weird how everyone wished that they were the exact opposite of what they were. the skinny people wanted to be chunkier, the chunky people wanted to be skinny. the tall ones wanted to be short, the short ones wanted to be tall. it was like no one was actually satisfied with what they got. that was part of the reason that she didn't mind being short; it's just how she was, and she knew there was nothing anyone could do about it. might as well make the best of things. she grimaced when he mentioned needles. "ugh." she said. "that's definitely not a good thing."
she tried as hard as she could to get the redness out of her cheeks, but it, like her height, wasn't exactly something she could control. she concentrated on feeling less embarassed, and it was a lot easier when he told her not to worry. it was good to know he wasn't offended, and that he found it stupid that people would. she shrugged. "i don't know. some people. i mean, i guess a lot of people think that you should know everything about them even if you've never really met before." she let out a sheepish smile when he said he didn't have enough of a mind to be offended. "oh, c'mon! i'm sure that's not true."
she shrugged her shoulders when he said he wouldn't perform unless paid. "i'll pay you if you want?" she said, letting out a laugh. "i don't care. i like hearing people perform. i mean, you have to pay to get into an actual performance, so why shouldn't i pay for a private one?" she was almost surprised when he said that he sang. he just didn't seem like the type who would sing in their free time; another reason why she knew it was better not to judge people. she smirked when he asked her that question. "i like hearing people perform." she said, shrugging again. "i'm curious to hear your voice now."

this was definitely an interesting conversation. it was taking a lot of his energy to just not bust out laughing. how could one not with the current conversation? it was quite hilarious. he watched her 'serious' face return to her face after she seemed to lose her composure for a minute. hearing her, he covered his mouth, trying not to laugh. taking a deep breathe, he looked at her. "see, this is why i didn't take it from you. that toaster obviously means a lot to you. i have a nice side, you know. i didn't take your precious toaster." he smirked at her as though he were serious. hearing her sentence, he pretended to think. "fine...but you have to add in your...your.... spatula too!"
seeing her give him a thumbs up sign, he chuckled slightly. damn, she was either very cheerful or just very childish. either way it was starting to get to him usually that would annoy the crap out of him, but she was doing it in a way it didn't affect him. interesting...he looked at her as she laughed. hearing her, he silently laughed, shaking his head. "sorry? i won't ruin your plans for world domination. i didn't see pointy teeth...what are we talking about?" he smirked at her. he nodded as she said needles weren't a good thing. "i know. well, i'm not exactly afraid of them...just not their best friends." he shrugged. he was cool with needles, he just avoided having to do anything with them unless it was absolutely necessary.
he listened as she explained, and he nodded. he understood where she was coming from. but he still shook his head at her. "that's just their faults. okay, rule number one; you being my best friend means no feeling embarressed or scared to say anything. worst i do is take your crayons...or that toaster." he grinned a cheesy grin at her as he took a sip of his drink. back to the toaster. "eh. maybe i do. either that or i'm very immune to being offended...i do n't know which would be better."
he laughed as she said she'd play. "you really want me to sing?" he listened to her, and he thought about it. "fine. but not here. maybe....later today. maybe." he wasn't exactly comfortable singing. but hey, if she wanted...damn, what was he doing today. he looked at her as she said she was curious to hear his voice, and he sighed. "fine. later today, if you want. but you tell anyone i'm not being nice about that toaster this time, you got that?" he honestly doubted he was going to let that one go anytime soon.
"so, now that we're getting to know each other, do you have some secret hidden skill like my wonderful ways of singing?" sure, she didn't know what he sounded like, but still, it was pretty wonderful, even if he did say so himself. he was curious to see if she did something that wasn't her at all. like....sky diving. okay, so he knew it wouldn't be that, but still. it would be good to get to know her...wow, he was being pretty well mannered that day. jeez...

it was remarkable how quickly chelsi began to feel comfortable with this boy. normally, it took her at least an hour or so to get even remotely comfortable with someone, let alone kid around with them like she was with gavin. it was okay, though; she didn't feel weird at how rushed this friendship was at all. she listened to him go on about why he didn't take her toaster from her, and she gave him a slight smile. "you're so kind." she said. "not many people would let me keep my toaster." when he mentioned taking her spatula, too, she made her eyes go wide with mock horror. "my spatula, too!? oh no! then i definitely won't make any bad moves."
she knew that, by most people's standards, she acted a lot like a child; her brother never missed a chance to tease her about how people probably thought she was twelve. she definitely knew when it was time to be serious, but most of the time she considered it much more fun to act younger. to children, the world was a playground, and she missed thinking that way. maybe that was why she was so cheerful and innocent all the time... "good. maybe, if you don't mention this to anyone, i'll let you rule the world with me." she shuddered when he said something else about needles. "i hate them; i always have. when i was little it used to take a few doctors to hold me down every time i had to get a shot."
she looked at him intently as he spoke, and took a quick sip of her drink before responding. "but i like my crayons and toaster! i don't want you to take them away!" she exclaimed, allowing herself to smile at him. that was one of the things she disliked most about herself; she was extremely self-conscious. she didn't like saying anything that people might get offended over, and she hated talking to people if she thought they were going to make fun of her. most of the time she played it off like she didn't care, but she did, mostly because she didn't want to hurt someone else's feelings, and she didn't know what offended people and what didn't. "i think immune to being offended is better. that's a good thing, isn't it?"
nodding quickly when he asked her if she really wanted him to sing, she smiled in triumph when he agreed. "oh, i don't expect you to sing here." she said quickly. "of course not. you can't give a free show to all these people, and i'm pretty sure a lot of them won't pay." she teased, and smiled. "in that case, i definitely won't tell; i want to keep my toaster, after all! i'll even pinky promise if it makes you feel better." she extended her arm across the table and stuck out her pinky to him for extra effect. sure, it was childish, but in her mind, the only way a promise was a promise was if it was a pinky promise.
he asked her if she had any hidden talents, and she thought about it. she danced, but he knew that, and it wasn't exactly a 'hidden skill'. she wasn't exactly the most adventurous out there; she'd rather stick to things that she knew she did well rather than going out there and trying random things for fun. she didn't sing or draw or act or anything, so she shrugged. "not really... in fact, i'll let you in on a little secret." she leaned across the table, closer to him, and whispered. "i'm actually a pretty boring person."
